Ingredient order can suggest relative concentration, but ingredients used at roughly 1% or less may be listed in different order. Performance depends on concentration, processing, pH and the complete formula. This educational tool does not assess allergies, irritation or medical suitability.
HOW TO READ HAIRCARE
A FORMULA IS MORE THAN ONE INGREDIENT.
SURFACTANTS
Cleansing agents help water lift oil, buildup and soil. Their finished-system mildness depends on the surfactant blend, concentration and formulation.
HUMECTANTS
Ingredients such as glycerin, honey, panthenol and sodium hyaluronate help attract or retain water within a conditioning system.
FATTY ALCOHOLS
Cetyl, cetearyl and stearyl alcohol are conditioning fatty alcohols. They are different from short-chain alcohols sometimes used as solvents.
SILICONES
Silicones can reduce friction, improve slip, refine frizz and protect the feel of damaged lengths. Their behavior varies by silicone and formula.
PROTEINS
Hydrolyzed proteins can form a supportive film and improve the feel of compromised hair. More is not automatically better for every routine.
PRESERVATIVES
Water-based cosmetics need preservation. The presence of a preservative is a basic part of protecting a formula from microbial contamination.
ONE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
METHOSULFATE IS NOT A SULFATE SHAMPOO.
Behentrimonium methosulfate is a conditioning ingredient commonly used for slip, softness and detangling. Despite part of its name, it is not the same as sulfate cleansing surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. The full ingredient name matters.

DIMETHICONE
A smoothing silicone used to reduce friction, improve slip and refine the feel of frizz-prone hair.

Can an ingredient checker tell me if a hair product is safe?
No. Safety and irritation depend on concentration, exposure, formulation, individual sensitivity and other factors that cannot be determined from an ingredient list alone. This tool explains cosmetic function.
Are sulfates always bad for hair?
No single surfactant determines the experience of a finished shampoo. Sulfate surfactants can cleanse efficiently, while overall mildness depends on the blend, concentration and complete formulation. Some people simply prefer sulfate-free cleansing systems.
Are silicones bad for curly hair?
Silicones are a broad ingredient family. Many provide slip, reduce friction, refine frizz and support heat protection. Whether someone prefers them depends on hair needs, product buildup, cleansing habits and the specific formula.
Why are ingredients listed in Latin?
Botanical ingredients often use standardized INCI names based on botanical nomenclature, followed by a common name in parentheses. This creates more consistent labeling across markets.
Does the first ingredient have the highest concentration?
Ingredients are generally listed in descending order of predominance, with flexibility in the ordering of ingredients present at approximately 1% or less. Exact percentages are not disclosed by the list.
